Library Mission Statement 

The ORHS Library is a place where students and staff explore big ideas, ask hard questions, and become discerning, confident thinkers, prepared for high school, college, career, and life success. We support that journey through a thoughtfully curated collection, collaborative instruction, and a student-centered environment built for every learner.  

 

Job Description for the Library Teacher Assistant 

 

Provide Excellent Service Daily  

• Be a welcoming and approachable first point of contact, helping students and staff feel comfortable, supported, and empowered to find what they need 

• Troubleshoot minor technology issues and support students in using library tools and digital resources effectively 

• Run the circulation desk, handling student sign-ins, checkouts, returns, and any immediate patron needs that arise throughout the day. 

• Partner with the librarian to maintain the library's online scheduling system.  

• Communicate with the ORHS registrar to recover library books when students are withdrawing. 

• Provide lamination services for teachers.  

• Keep the collection organized and accessible by accurately sorting and shelving books, AV materials, and equipment. 

• Monitor and replenish office and makerspace consumables and workroom supplies, ordering as needed to keep the library running smoothly. 

 

Support School-Wide Initiatives  

• Mentor student library aides to build capable, confident contributors to the library program and future-ready young professionals. 

• Maintain a safe, productive library environment by managing student behavior and policy issues directly and consistently, using LibraryTrac and eHall Pass for student attendance and Raptor for school emergencies. 

• Conduct the annual end-of-year furniture and equipment inventory as required by the district. 

Build and Maintain an Exemplary Collection  

• Maintain well-organized records, digital and print, for all library expenditures while also coordinating quotes, invoices, and order status with the bookkeeper.  

• Process new materials and equipment with care, applying labels, covers, security strips, stamps, and other finishing touches to become shelf ready.  

• Manage the overdue and lost materials process, including overdue notices sent to students and parents, fine collection, accurate record-keeping, and timely reporting to the bookkeeper.  

• Ensure the library's holdings are accurate and up to date through changes of call numbers and the annual collection inventory, for example. 

• Extend the life of the collection by repairing books and materials as needed. 

 

Promote Reading and Book Circulation  

• Partner with the librarian to design and run library programming that makes reading feel engaging, relevant, and connected to students’ interests, identities, and learning. 

• Create eye-catching thematic displays and a weekly whiteboard feature that spark curiosity and connect with students.  

• Design and build the monthly Library Showcase display, bringing creativity and intention to how the library presents itself to the school community. 

• Read from the ORHS library collection. Talk with students about what they like to read and make confident, personalized recommendations while building relationships that make the library feel like it belongs to them. 

• Reflect on and contribute to the ongoing improvement of library programs, displays, and services looking for ways we can better reach students and inspire a love of reading. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Paraprofessional Certificate or Bachelor's degree is preferred.
